My Signal Booster's Power Supply Died

Alfa wifi adapter Panda wi-fi adapter

In my last blog I said I might reconnect my Alfa adapter to my Alfa router. It turns out that my adapter finally bought the farm, so I bought a new one for $50. Either the adapters have gone up in price (like everything else) and/or I got a really good deal on the last AWUS036NH adapter I bought. ...also, I didn't get the exact same adapter, got an AWUS036NHA instead (the new improved adapter). The last adapter I bought from a Canadian company (The Needle Store), because they were the only sellers of the adapter listed for use wth my R36A router. Alfa technical support told me the newer adapter would work with my router, and I didn't want to wait for shipping, so I ordered the newer adapter from Amazon. So maybe I still could've gotten the older adapter for just $40, but at least with Amazon I don't have to pay for (two day) shipping.

The new adapter is working just fine, but wasn't the cause of my problems. Yes, the Panda adapter might have had some issues with my Wi-Fi setup, but maybe not. The problem was the DVE power supply that came with my signal booster died. I mentioned before that the lack of lights on my signal booster was concerning. Normally I would've immediately thought that implied the power supply was dead, or the signal booster had shorted out. I was worried too much about using an adapter that wasn't approved by the router manufacturer, Alfa. In other words, I let my judgement get clouded by a warning/recommendation.

I ordered a new power supply (once again, from Amazon) but the connector was too large for the signal boosters injector; won't fit. I'm returning the power supply (Amazon is good about refunds) and ordered another one that comes with an assortment of connectors; maybe the smallest connector will fit. I also contacted Rokland, the company I bought the signal boster from. Rokland no longer carries the booster, or any of the power supplies that came with it. Rokland is going to contact Alfa, and see if they have the power supply I need. Once I get the power supply I need, I'm going to stock up on it too avoid future inconveniences, like the one I'm having now. BTW, the weakening signal I was suffering from, was probably caused by the power supply flaking out; points to the power supply being the root of my problems.
